Sprayed concrete is a technique of placing concrete or mortar through a hose at high velocity using pneumatic air pressure onto a required surface. It can typically be reinforced by use of embedded steel bar, mesh or fibres.
Sprayed concrete can be carried out either by dry or wet mix technique. It offers versatile uses that afford relatively efficient large area repair solutions. In many cases saving time and money by avoiding the use of formwork.
Dry mix(gunite) involves placing of dry bagged cement mortar into a mixing hopper that is conveyed under pneumatic air pressure through a hose to a nozzle end. The mixture of cement mortar and water is completed as the mixture hits the receiving surface. The nozzleman controls the addition of water at the nozzle end during the spray process.
This process is particularly useful in overhead or vertical or formed repair applications where it is necessary to frequently stop or move locations as the nozzleman is able to instantly control the spray process at all times.
Wet mix (shotcrete) involves the pumping of pre-mixed prepared concrete (typically ready mixed concrete) through a hose to a nozzle. Compressed air is used to impel the mixture to the receiving surface. This process is particularly useful where large volume pours are required.
Sprayed concrete is commonly used to line tunnel or basement walls, mines, subways sea defences, harbour walls, swimming pool shells, and various ground stabilisation solutions.
